John Elliott Leighton, managing partner of Leighton Law, P.A. has litigated and tried many significant cases throughout the United States. Many of Leighton’s cases are high profile and have had wide-reaching social implications. Several cases have resulted in policy or procedure changes on the part of the businesses or governmental entities sued.

Mr. Leighton has for many years represented European citizens who have been injured while traveling in the United States.  His cases include many involving hotel and resort injuries, travel-related injuries, taxicab and rental car mishaps, aviation and cruise ship incidents.

Leighton has received much recognition in the field of law including credit from The Best Lawyers in America, an election for “Top Lawyer” in the South Florida Legal Guide, as well as recognition from SuperLawyer (including 100 SuperLawyers in Florida), and Florida Trend Magazine’s Florida Legal Elite. He has been awarded an AVVO.com “Superb” rating of 10.0/10 and an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating in the legal industry. He is Chairman of The Academy of Trial Advocacy, an invitation-only association of the leading catastrophic injury lawyers in the United States.  Additionally, Mr. Leighton sits  on the Executive Committee of the National College of Advocacy and is past Chairman of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America’s Motor Vehicle, Highway and Premises Liability Section.

Recently, Leighton authored Litigating Premises Security Cases, a two-volume book published by Thomson-West, providing comprehensive information on investigating, preparing, and trying inadequate security cases and representing crime victims. Consequently, he is a frequent lecturer at national legal programs and has taught at seminars, colleges, and conventions all over the United States. Mr. Leighton received the Advocate of Justice Award from the National Crime Victim Bar Association

As a trial lawyer, Leighton has obtained some of the largest verdicts and settlements in the country, including a $24.3 million wrongful death verdict and $24.1 million medical malpractice verdict. He continues to represent victims of sexual assault and sex abuse, including those who are victimized by institutional and corporate cover-ups. Leighton additionally specializes in malpractice.
